What does BJJ stand for?
BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. You will also see it written as jiu jitsu, jiu-jitsu, or jiujitsu. Same art. The Brazilian part matters: the Gracie family in Brazil adapted older Japanese jujutsu into a ground-focused system built on leverage, positional control, and submissions. In conversation, people say BJJ, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, or just jiu-jitsu. Traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu is broader (strikes, throws, weapons). Modern sport BJJ is mostly grappling on the ground, with gi and no-gi rule sets. If you are brand new, remember this: BJJ = Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art and sport where you win by tap-out (choke or joint lock) or by points in competition.
