How long do you stay unconscious after a choke?

After a blood choke is released, most people wake up within a few seconds. Grapplers often describe it as lights out, then suddenly back, confused about what just happened. The blackout itself is usually brief when the choke is released right away. How you feel afterward varies: foggy, embarrassed, mild headache, or ready to stand up too fast. "How long do you stay unconscious" is different from "how long until you pass out." Passing out can take roughly 4 to 10 seconds once a blood choke is locked. Staying out is usually much shorter if your partner lets go immediately. If someone stays unresponsive longer than a few seconds, treat it as a medical emergency: protect the airway, get coaching staff or medical help, and do not slap them around or shove them back into hard sparring. After you wake up, sit or lie still for a minute. Drink water. Tell your coach. If symptoms linger (severe headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, vision problems), stop training and seek medical care. Do not treat getting choked out as a normal weekly habit. This is educational gym knowledge, not a medical diagnosis.
