What is a breakfall in BJJ?

A breakfall is the technique of landing safely when thrown or swept. You slap the mat with your arm to distribute impact, keep your chin tucked to protect your head, and position your body to absorb force across a larger area rather than concentrated points. Proper breakfalls prevent injuries from takedowns and sweeps. Forward breakfalls land on forearms with head turned. Backward breakfalls land with arms slapping out and chin tucked. Side breakfalls spread impact across your arm and side. Breakfalls are the first thing taught in judo and should be drilled until automatic. They protect you during your entire grappling career.
