What is cauliflower ear?
Cauliflower ear is a permanent ear deformation common in wrestlers, BJJ practitioners, and MMA fighters. It happens when blunt trauma to the ear causes blood to collect between the skin and cartilage (called a hematoma). If left untreated, the blood hardens and the ear develops a lumpy, cauliflower-like appearance. Common causes include: head grinding during takedowns, getting your head squeezed in triangles or guillotines, and repeated friction against the mat. Once fully formed, cauliflower ear is permanent and can only be cosmetically improved through surgery. Many grapplers view cauliflower ear as a badge of honor that shows dedication to the sport. Prevention is key: wear wrestling headgear during training, especially when drilling takedowns or positions that grind your ears.
