What is open mat in BJJ?

Open mat in BJJ is unstructured training time at the gym: no formal class plan, no coach leading every round. You show up, warm up, and choose what to do: drill a technique from class, positional sparring, or free rolls. Attendance is usually optional and schedules vary by academy. What to expect: people of mixed levels sharing the mat, partners asking each other to roll, and less “everyone does the same drill” energy than a fundamentals class. Some gyms keep a coach on the floor for safety; others leave it mostly peer-run. Etiquette still applies: clean gear, ask before hard rounds, tap early, and respect space. How to use it well: bring 1–2 goals (“knee cut entries,” “escapemount”), find partners who want the same work, and log what you practiced afterward. Open mat is not an excuse to only smash beginners. It is extra reps. Portuguese and Spanish searches (“o que é open mat,” “open mat significado”) mean the same thing: free / open training time, not a competition format called “open match.”
