What is pummeling?
Pummeling is the battle for inside position in the clinch - a fundamental wrestling skill essential for BJJ. When you are chest-to-chest with an opponent, you both fight to get your arms inside their arms (underhooks) rather than outside (overhooks). Pummeling is the constant swimming motion of fighting for underhooks: dipping your shoulder, threading your arm inside, and securing the underhook before your opponent does. Whoever wins the pummel generally controls the clinch and can initiate takedowns or throws. In BJJ, pummeling skills help with takedown offense and defense, guard passing pressure, and escaping inferior positions. Drill pummeling regularly as a warmup - it builds clinch sensitivity, timing, and the muscle memory for transitioning between upper body grips.
