What is X-guard?
X-guard positions you underneath your opponent with your legs forming an X shape around one of their legs. One shin crosses behind their far thigh while the other foot hooks their near hip or thigh, so you can elevate, off-balance, and sweep them. It is a classic open-guard system popularized by Marcelo Garcia: get deep underneath, control the standing leg, then attack sweeps, technical standups, back takes, or transitions into single-leg X and other leg entanglements. To enter X-guard, you usually need to get under their hips from butterfly, single-leg X, or after a failed pass. Keep their posture broken and your hooks tight. From there, common attacks include elevating them for a technical standup sweep, kicking their base out for a scissor-style sweep, or taking the back when they post a hand. In modern no-gi, X-guard also feeds heel hooks and other ashi positions, so many people treat it as both a sweep platform and a leg-lock gateway. Common beginner mistakes: staying too far away (you must get under), letting them step out of the X, and sweeping without controlling their near leg. Drill entries first, then one reliable sweep, then one transition to single-leg X. Once those stick, X-guard becomes a high-percentage guard instead of a novelty position.
